    Highway 41 work begins Monday

The public is warned to expect delays up to 20 minutes for the next few weeks along Highway 41 through Oakhurst.
An asphalt concrete overlay, or repaving, project is scheduled to begin Monday night [August 9] and end September 1, says state Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Karen Day.
The 41 repaving project covers the area just north of Highway 49 and just south of the Golden Chain Theatre.
During the day, one lane of traffic will be open each way. However, from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays (this means the road will be open Friday morning at 7), there will be only one lane open for through traffic. This could mean delays up to 20 minutes.
"This is a maintenance job to maintain the quality of the road, says Ms. Day. "Expect delays around the clock. It's impossible to do this kind of work without slightly inconveniencing some people.
After the repaving and new striping, the roadway shoulders will be brought up, by using gravel and dirt, to meet the new height. The drainage will also be rechecked.
While Ms. Day hopes there will be no daytime delays, she believes it is better to forewarn, just in case travelers have to stop and wait.
A similar project near Yosemite Lakes Park, where two inches of height was added to Highway 41, is scheduled to be completed the end of next week.

Indian Lakes Estates water project adopted by county

MADERA - An improvement in the quality of the water for residents of Indian Lakes Estates is in the works following approval here on Tuesday by the Madera County Board of Supervisors.
A community-endorsed assessment tied to the parcels of property will help pay for the $1.3 million improvement. Each parcel will be charged $1,434, according to figures provided the board.
Land-owners voted 179 to 48 in favor of the assessment on their parcels, supervisors were told. If a majority had not been supportive, the Board of Supervisors could not have proceeded.
Additional funds will come from low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utility Services.
In addition to improving the quality of water, the project provides increased capacity for urgent fire-safety.
