    If Mammoth blows …
What to expect, what to do if our neighbor erupts

By Morgan Voorhis of the Sierra Star

With all the recent seismic activity around Mammoth Lakes, the possibility of Mammoth blowing looms once again into the limelight.
And what does that mean for the Mountain Area, which is approximately 40 miles from Mammoth as the crow flies?
It's highly likely that it means nothing at all.
"There's a one-in-200 chance that there would be an eruption in any given year, roughly estimates David Hill, the U.S. Geological Survey's chief scientist for monitoring the Long Valley Caldera, which includes Mammoth.
"And if there was, the chance of the wind, which typically blows west to east, blowing towards Oakhurst at the same time of the eruption, is one-in-2,000.
Mammoth's largest eruption, which occurred 700,000 years ago, resulted in ash traveling great distances to the east. Areas to the west, such as the Mountain Area, were unaffected.

‘The View' is truly a reason for celebration
    by Crystal Bybee

Thursday, July 9, was not only the opening night for the dramatic production, "The View from Here, by Margaret Dulaney, but also the opening night of the Front Row Theatre.
As the group and their supporters toasted to christen the new place, celebrate their first success and hope for many more such nights, it was obvious there was a lot there to celebrate.
This play is well worth celebrating and a good start for the new theatre.
An agoraphobic babysitter takes in her troubled sister, while the man across the street is being left by his wife and the up-the-street neighbor has a bizarre story or two to tell. It might not sound like a situation any of us have been in, but it is the first look you get of the characters in "The View from Here.
Though the theatre might not be in a prime entertainment location (it is in the back of Oakhurst's Enterprise Cen-ter) and the seating is somewhat creative (when you convert a warehouse into a theatre you have to have a little imagination) the show was a success and a joy to watch.

Girls volleyball: alive and well in Eastern Madera County

Coach Dave Hamm's 14-year-olds club team finished 13th in the nation after their strong showing in the Junior National Volleyball Champion-ship held in Dallas during June 26-July 2.
There were 64 competing teams. The best teams in the nation and Puerto Rico participated.
The team was surprised on the first day when they received the No. 1 seeding in the 64 team tournament.
The team, consisting of Joy Bonham, Mckenzie Cox, Shar-leena Hanft, Jenny Kurtley, Kristen Lownbury, Stephine Miller, Danielle Orong, Amanda Vawter, Jamie Walthius, and Jessie Young began making preparation for the trip through fund-raising events, such as garage sales, phone card sales, and business and private donations.
"It was quite an undertaking … everyone was so supportive, says Coach Hamm.
During the first day, Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois fell victims to the Yosemite team. "We were very nervous through the first day being in the national championship with the No. 1 seeding, and we struggled through some matches, but we ended up in a tie for first. We beat Indiana 15-1, says Coach Hamm.
