  • Teen charged with stabbing

An Oakhurst boy has been charged with attempted murder for a knife attack during a Thursday afternoon dispute.
The 15-year-old was arrested by Madera County sheriff's deputies after he fled from the scene of the dispute along Highway 41 in central Oakhurst.
Sheriff John Anderson said three young people became involved in a dispute and that Jason Moore, 18, Chowchilla, was stabbed in the abdomen.
The victim was treated at Oakhurst Urgent Care and then moved to University Medical Center in Fresno, where he was later listed in stable condition.
The sheriff says deputies were called at 4:20 by a report of several young people threatening with baseball bats.
Deputies were quickly told that the assailant had taken off on foot, heading south along Highway 41. He was quickly apprehended and eyewitnesses of the assault identified him as the attacker, deputies report.

Increased staffing possible for area's CDF fire stations

At last Thursday's Eastern Madera County Fire-Safe Council public meeting, it was revealed that the addition of full-time staffers at three area fire stations is under serious consideration.
The county Board of Supervisors and CDF will be deciding on preliminary budget allocations soon.
At the monthly FSC meeting in Oakhurst, a near-overflow audience of citizens joined officials of Madera County's Road and Planning departments, CDF, the California Highway Patrol and Sierra Ambulance Service for further discussions of ways and means to lower the odds against wildfire disasters in our area.
And many residents left hugely encouraged by news that there is a real possibility of increased year-round full-time staffing at fire stations in their neighborhoods.

  • North Fork boy victim of accidental shooting

O'NEALS - A youngster on a target-practice outing with his family was accidentally wounded when a rifle discharged Sunday morning.
Jordan Vining, 10, was being treated at University Medical Center for a .22-calibre wound in his back.
Madera County Sheriff John Anderson says the family of logging contractor Paul Vining was on the outing when the mishap occurred shortly before 11 Sunday.
The weapon apparently discharged on its own, the bullet hitting Jordan in his lower back, the sheriff said.
The family was driving Jordan for medical treatment when they came upon a patrolling deputy along North Fork Road [222]. The deputy called an ambulance from Oakhurst.

Medics treated the boy before delivering him to a helicopter waiting at the Park and Ride lot at Highway 41.
Jordan is the second North Fork boy to be the victim of an accidental gunshot wound in recent months. Josh Thomas, a sixth-grader at North Fork Elementary, is recovering from a wound he received in early December.
